THE WONDERBURGER STORY
Mt. Greenwood's first exposure to WONDERBURGERS and CURLY 'Q" fires was on March 8, 1954, at Bill Grant's WONDERBURGER #1 at 3256 W.111th Street. "Moose" Bowen, Bill's boss from "Superburger" on 85th Place and Stony Island Avenue (where Bill was employed part-time) flipped the first WONDERBURGER on the grill and wished him good luck.
On March 26, 1958, WONDERBURGER #2 became a reality when the restaurant moved to larger quarters at 11052 South Kedzie Avenue. That spaces now been incorporated into the building on that site.
Eleven years later, on May 22nd, 1969 WONDERBURGER #3 opened its doors at 11045 South Kedzie-across the street from #2. Late one night in mid-May, Bill, his son Mike and several sturdy employees and friends pushed the 8 stool counter across Kedzie Avenue when traffic permitted.
A sudden fire engulfed the restaurant in the early hours of September 16th, 1976, and all but gutted the interior. Bill was determined to rebuild and, several months later, with the help of dedicated family and friends, WONDERBURGER #3 was back in business---brighter and better than ever.
After almost 60 years WONDERBURGER #3 closed its doors in 2014. Back by popular demand WONDERBURGER #4 opened at its new location at 3333 W. 111th Street in the spring of 2019. WONDERING what took so long...come in and see for yourself!
